Executive Director's Corner

Dear Friends -
As the warm breezes of summer fade away the memory of twenty performances for more than 2500 people at sites throughout the city remains vividly clear. Free performances by Circuit Productions were presented with the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, the Museum of the City of New York, Brooklyn Public Library, Central Park’s Harlem Meer Performance Series and the YMCA of Greater New York. We begin the Fall with some exciting programs.

Fall kicks off with programs including:

Rhythm Journeys: Masters of World Music and Dance featuring Tony Terrell’s Caribbean Jazz Quartet- September 6th; Charles Moore Dance Theatre’s Across the African Diaspora- September 13th, Orlando Marin – the Last Mambo King’s – Quintet –November 22nd, and Sonido Costeno – December 6th.
Initial funding for Rhythm Journeys was made possible by the New York State Music Fund. Now in its 2nd year of programming live program funding will be provided by New York State Council on the Arts – a State agency and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.

World Beat Performances and Workshops will reach teens and young adult populations throughout NYC and Long Island. Join Wayne Daniels at his workshop, From Jazz to Hip Hop – Jamaica Library, 10/16 and Bedford Library, 10/29 or visit P.S 90 in Coney Island (see AIE for details) or Uniondale Library on Long Island for Irene Koloseus’s Feraba: African Rhythm Tap Dance – at a lecture/dem on percussion and drumming.

Finally, for an early holiday treat for toddlers and families come join puppeteer, Theresa Linniahan - on November 1st - as she performs “Witch Bungle” in the new Dweck Center at Central Library, Brooklyn. See Special Fall Press release for more details.

Swing to the beat until we meet,
Susan
